There’s nothing more likely to uninspire me more than the re-release of games on an annual basis with minor gameplay tweaks in an attempt to ring every last drop out of a license and in the process sting the game playing public. This is a trend far more commonly found on the console market and is yet to really pollute the mobile games world in the same way.

This is the latest release of a Tony Hawk’s skateboarding game on mobile and what with the multiple console versions having done the rounds in the last few years, my cynicism wonders if this heinous crime is about to contaminate the mobile market.

Sonic has spent the summer training hard with Mario for their joint effort in Nintendo’s Olympic campaign. Mario may not be arriving on your mobile for some time but Sonic has enjoyed great success with quite a few titles this year. The latest game sees Sonic relaxing on the golf course. Naturally, this is a golf course with a twist; rings, springs and all things Sonic are littered throughout the 3 nine hole courses.

The concept has been done before in Worms Golf but Sonic's platform game is more aptly suited to a golf conversion. The courses have been adapted from Green Hill, Marble and Spring Yard and it's rather more plausible to play golf as Sonic than smash a suicidal worm around.

The controls are fairly basic and are adequate for such a casual game. The trajectory can be adjusted by pressing left/right. The verticals control the spin and 5 dictates your power bar. Pressing a shoulder key will let browse around the course to plot your next move. The courses have been designed so that you can just hit full power and let the ball ricochet around the course and you should still achieve par or better - at least on the easier levels.

There are three difficulty modes which are unlocked as you complete the previous modes. The courses remain the same but enemies and the dreaded wind await you in the harder levels. Get a shot wrong and you lose a life (but no penalty shots); extra lives can be won by collecting rings.

The levels are littered with rings and bonuses; while it won't be possible to collect everything on your journey to the green, there is plenty of incentive to replay and find a few more bonuses and hidden paths. Multiplayer, pass-the-phone gaming is also available and helps to stretch some more gaming out of this title.

Beach Volley recreates beach volleyball as best it can with all the basic rules remaining intact. The AI, in the later levels in particular, is challenging and won’t concede a point without a fight (unless that is, you get an ace, which in this game is quite easy to do). The controls are amazingly simple. You control the 2 players, one using the buttons 1 and 3, and the other using 4 and 6 (moving forward and back). To pass the ball, simply make sure you’re underneath the ball when it lands and don’t press a thing. After about a 10 minute learning curve, you begin to pre-emptively defending against smashes, and passing the ball for the other player to smash. It’s an excellent system, and once learnt is very easy to play.

The graphics in PBV are top notch. Everything from the hair on the players to the boats sailing in the background are extremely well detailed and animated, and the game employs some of the best animation techniques I’ve seen. Vivid and colourful, the game recreates the beach like no other similar game. Also, the animations are very fluid, something extremely important in a fast paced game like this. The shadows, the colours, the animations… It’s impossible to find a fault in the graphics.
